Recent Events

Cultures of Consent recently traveled to New York to lead workshops on rape culture with 10th, 11th and 12th grade students at Brooklyn Friends School. Organized by sophomores for the entire upper school with visiting students from neighboring schools in attendance as well, the Community Issues Conference brought us together with representatives from the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault and the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault to lead workshops on campus sexual assault responses and active bystander intervention training. We were impressed with the eagerness of the students to engage with the variety of our interactive lessons and we received excellent reviews for our activities from students who all indicated that they felt empowered to challenge rape and sexual assault safely and effectively. So, we look forward to working with BFS again and the Community Issues Conference again next year!

Cultures of Consent and students from the University of Maryland's College Park Public Leadership Scholars program celebrated a year-long collaboration with an outreach event on campus promoting consent and communication. We spent an afternoon tabling on the quad with activities including a 'spin the bottle' trivia table and interactive poster-making inviting students to tell us how they give and get consent. The reaction to our messages was overwhelmingly enthusiastic and came from scores of undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty. This collaboration also connected us with our current intern from UMD and attracted another group of students from the leadership program to request to work with Cultures of Consent for the 2016-2017 academic year, so we're thrilled to continue to connect with passionate leaders and activists at UMD!
